Heavy Machinery & Equipment
With a dedicated team of heavy machinery and equipment transport professionals, you’ll have access to the experience and knowledge needed to relocate your oversize cargo nationwide.
Our extensive network of road, rail and sea freight partners means we have access to move everything from agricultural and farming equipment to earthmoving, construction and mining machinery including cranes, bulldozers, excavators, telehandlers, wheel loaders, motor graders, rollers, compactors and more.
Working closely with earthmoving, agricultural, construction and mining companies, we have capability to move oversize cargo of loads up to 300 tonnes and measuring up to 6.9m in height, 12m in width and 20m in length. We provide transport solutions to move all self-propelled cargo and tow hitched loads.
Heavy machinery and equipment moves are not “one size fits all” and requires intense planning. Our transport specialists will review your transport requirements, budgets and timeframes to divulge the meticulous logistics needed and will determine the most appropriate transport method; whether by sea freight, road, rail or a combination of modes.
With rising fuel costs, the costs of transport by traditional land freight is often expensive. In most circumstances, shipping costs avoid the need for escorts, wide load permits and other costs associated with long, wide, high and heavy loads. Dismantling and reassembling equipment is also not necessary, further reducing the costs of transport.

For this project our High & Heavy team were given the task to relocate multiple large static items from one side of the country to the other. The packing list included multiple 55,000kg engines. This type of cargo is the perfect candidate for shipping over road transport. Not only will shipping be more cost effective for this movement, the cargo is also protected from the elements below deck. Once craned off the delivering trucks these very large static items are secured to a mafi trailer for ease of handling at the wharf.
Shipping a large static item on a mafi typically involves the use of specialized equipment and processes. A mafi, short for "roll-on/roll-off" or RoRo, is a large platform that is designed to transport heavy or bulky cargo, such as vehicles and machinery.
To ship a large static item on a mafi, the item is first placed onto the mafi platform, either through a loading ramp or by crane. The item is then secured onto the mafi using chains, straps, or other restraints to prevent it from shifting during transportation. The mafi is then towed onto the RoRo vessel, where it is further secured to prevent movement or damage during transit.
Shipping large static items on a mafi requires careful planning and coordination, as well as expertise in loading and securing cargo. The team at McPhee Freight are ready to handle your next project Australia wide, no matter how large the cargo.

The High & Heavy team at McPhee Freight are regularly asked to move packages of machines around Australia. While our highly experienced team makes this look easy, there are many pitfalls any inexperienced company will encounter that cost the clients valuable time and money.
Whether you have a project on the other side of the country or have sold your fleet to an auction yard in another state, McPhee Freight will take care of the entire process for you from door to door. Depending on your timeframe and budget we will utililse our road freight network or move the cargo via sea freight.
Shipping used machinery via Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) is a method of transport where machinery is loaded onto a specialised ship, which is equipped with ramps that allow the machinery to be driven on and off the ship.
Here's a basic explanation of how the process typically works:
- The machinery is inspected and prepared for shipment. This may involve cleaning, ensuring the units are mechanically sound and securing any loose parts so they can be handled correctly at the wharf.
- The machinery is then transported to the port, where it is loaded onto a RoRo vessel. The machinery is typically driven onto the ship using its own wheels or with the help of a towing vehicle.
- Once on board, the machinery is secured in place using straps or chains to prevent it from moving during transit.
- The RoRo vessel then sets sail, transporting the machinery to its destination port.
- If your cargo is entering Tasmania or Western Australia there are certain quarantine requirements that must be met. Our team will have guided you through these requirements or assisted with cleaning prior to departure to avoid delays with delivery.
Shipping machinery via RoRo has several advantages over other transport methods. For example, it is typically more cost-effective than road freight. Ensuring 20 excavators arrive by a certain date for a project 4000 kms away is much simpler via RoRo. Additionally, RoRo vessels are designed to accommodate heavy and oversized cargo, making them an ideal choice for shipping large machinery.

FAQs
Organising and preparing cargo for shipping can be tricky. We've compiled some of our most frequently asked questions to make things easier.
Transport via sea freight means your vehicle will travel in a fully enclosed ship between ports. Vessels are fully enclosed, ventilated, and watertight which means your vehicle will not be exposed to the elements. There are also no stone chips, mud, insects, road/truck grime or red dust to contend with which is prevalent in the Australian outback.
Vehicles travel on specialty-built ships and are safely and securely fastened by professional stevedores to prevent movement during transit.
